The next-gen Lexus ES sedan has been revealed at the ongoing Auto Shanghai motor show in China. It features four powertrain options, including a hybrid pair and, for the first time, two all-electric variants. Lexus claims that the new ES has better ride quality, comfort and quietness than its predecessor and has been designed to offer “first-class comfort for everyone on board”.
- Electric versions offer up to 685km range (CLTC) on a single charge
- Battery capacity not yet disclosed by Lexus
New Lexus ES powertrain options
Electric: 350e and 550e variants
The ES EV will be available in two variants – the 350e, producing 224.3hp with front-wheel drive, and the 550e, generating 342.6hp with all-wheel drive. As per Lexus, the 350e offers a range of up to 685km, while the 550e can go up to 610km, both measured under the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC). While Lexus has not disclosed the battery capacity, it is likely to borrow the RZ SUV’s 77kWh battery pack. The 0-100 kph acceleration times are 8.9 seconds for the 350e and 5.9 seconds for the 550e.
Hybrid: 300h and 350h
The ES 300h will get two naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine options: 2-litre (197.1hp) and 2.5-litre (201.2hp). Whereas, the ES 350h will be run only by the larger 2.5-litre petrol engine, but in a higher 247.4hp tune. Both engines are paired with an eCVT, sending power to either front or all four wheels. Range and hybrid battery charging time (10-80 percent) are yet to be disclosed by Lexus.
New Lexus ES exterior
New connected LED tail-lights

Many of the design elements are inspired by the LF-ZC concept. Visually, the electric ES stands apart from the hybrid mainly by its closed-off front end nose, while the hybrid version features a slim grille instead. Even the massive signature spindle grille is gone, and the bumper is flanked by new LED headlights. The L-shaped DRLs are retained, below which sit turn indicators in an inverted L shape.
The profile section is full of aerodynamic lines and the doors feature electrically operated door handles. The refreshed alloy wheels, in dual-tone, will be offered with tyre sizes from 18 to 21 inches, depending on the market. The rear section is completely new as well, and features a connected LED bar for the first time, in the middle of which sits an illuminated LEXUS lettermark (in all powertrains). Also, the bumper gets L-shaped lights on either ends this time.
