The National Medical Commission (NMC) has proposed a three-tier grievance redressal system to address students’ concerns. Additionally, an online portal has been launched for students to directly register their complaints.

Each year, thousands of students face difficulties. According to a report, medical colleges across the country receive over 5,000 complaints annually. The primary issues include ragging, mental harassment, delayed stipends, and excessive fee collection. UGC’s 2023 report indicates that more than 700 cases of ragging were reported from medical colleges alone. Many students hesitate to file complaints due to fear or lack of action, exacerbating the problems, sometimes leading to severe outcomes like dropping out, mental stress, and even suicide.

Common issues include:

– Charging excessive fees

– Delay or non-payment of stipends

– Ragging or mental harassment

– Unnecessary barriers to internships

– Faculty or staff misconduct

– Problems related to syllabus, attendance, examinations, and assessment

How Will Solutions Be Found Now?

Complaints will be resolved at three levels:

1. Medical College/Institute Level

2. Relevant University Level

3. State DME or Department of Health and Medical Education Level

If issues remain unresolved at these levels, students can directly register their complaints on the NMC’s online portal.

A Grievance Redressal Committee, comprising senior officials, will be established in every medical college, university, and state department. Institutions must provide complete information about this committee and an online complaint link on their websites. A record of every complaint will be maintained, detailing when it was received, what action was taken, and the resolution time.

How To Complain Online?

– If your complaint is unresolved at the college or university level, visit the NMC portal.

– First, register on the portal.

– Fill in the details of your complaint.

– The NMC team will then take the necessary action.

Students must note that they should first lodge complaints at the level where the problem began. Complaints will be resolved quickly and transparently at every level. Colleges and universities must clearly display the entire process and committee information on their websites.
