Premier League skippers will no longer be mandated to wear rainbow-themed armbands, and players will also not be asked to wear pride-themed warm-up tops ahead of their games.

Captains of the PL outfits agreed not to wear rainbow armbands or use pride warm-up tops, following some players’ reluctance tied to religious beliefs, ahead of the season.

Instances such as Manchester United’s Noussair Mazraoui opting out of an Adidas jacket in support of the LGBTQ community last season, and his teammates joining him in the same ilk, highlighted the issue.

In another instance, former Crystal Palace Marc Guehi wrote “I love Jesus” on his rainbow armband and was issued a warning by the FA.

The league looks for a shift to a campaign aiming to promote inclusion without individual diktats, including inclusive iconography on stadium LEDs and flags, in addition to plans of a Pride themed matchball.

Another report cited that a player complained to his club that he has been put on the front of the Match-day programme during the Rainbow Laces program two year in a row due to concerns that the repeated placement could be interpreted as implying he was gay, rather than highlighting him as an ally in the efforts aimed at inclusion. The club however went on to clarified that the selection was unintentional.

The move is seen as a strategic maneuver to not force players to don what they might not agree with, without the league straying from their Corporate Social Responsibilities.
