World Champion D Gukesh got the better of Magnus Carlsen in classical format on Sunday in the high-profile meeting between the two at Norway Chess 2025.

The Indian teenager, playing with white pieces on the day, capitalised on a late-game blunder from the 34-year-old Norwegian GM to pick up the win. It was Gukesh’s first win over the multi-time World Champion in the classical format. Gukesh, who appeared to chase the game midway through the matchup, turned it on its head before condemning Carlsen to a defeat in an explosive end game.

Gukesh was lauded by fans following his victory as he spared time for pictures and autographs to mark his maiden triumph in the format against Carlsen.

Gukesh looked moved following the victory as he took a beat to take in the essence of the moment before penning down the final touches on his game notes.
