Indian boxer Pawan Bartwal continued his impressive performance, advancing to the quarter-finals of the men’s 55kg category at the 4th Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament with a decisive 5-0 victory over Cambodia’s Sao Rangsey on Sunday.
India has sent a strong 19-member team to the prestigious tournament, organised under the World Boxing-backed Asian body, which has attracted skilled boxers from countries like China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, South Korea, and host Thailand.
Pawan, who hails from Syupuri village in Uttarakhand, exhibited tactical maturity and ring control from the beginning. He started cautiously, dodging early swings and waiting for the right moment before landing a sharp punch to the face, setting the tone for the match.
The 26-year-old repeatedly pinned his opponent in the corners, and a brilliant bob-and-weave move midway through the second round created an opportunity for another clean strike. With tight defence and calculated aggression, he kept Rangsey on the back foot, securing a unanimous decision – his second consecutive win of the tournament.
A member of the Indian Army since 2017 and a National Championship silver medallist, Bartwal has been boxing since. He now heads into the quarter-finals with strong momentum and his sights set on a podium finish.
