Valentino, Italy’s legendary couturier, breathed his last on Monday. He was 93 years old, and died peacefully at his Roman residence. Taking to Instagram, the fashion house and foundation shared a statement: “Our founder, Valentino Garavani passed away today at his Roman residence, surrounded by his loved ones. The lying in state will be held at PM23 in Piazza Mignanelli 23 on Wednesday January 21st and Thursday January 22nd, from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm.”
Tributes pour in
Mourning the death of the icon, friends and colleagues from the industry poured in their heartfelt condolences on Instagram and X. From Anne Hathaway to Sarah Jessica Parker, Gwyneth Paltrow to Cindy Crawford, the fashion fraternity came together to pay tribute to the legend. Fellow designer Donatella Versace too shared a post on Instagram with the caption, “Today, we lost a true maestro who will forever be remembered for his art,” she wrote, “My thoughts go to Giancarlo who never left his side for all these years. He will never be forgotten 🕊️.”

The man who was in love with beauty, his family, his muses, his friends. His dogs, his gardens, and a good Hollywood story. I loved him so much. I loved how he always pestered me to ‘at least wear a little mascara’ when I came to dinner. I loved his naughty laugh,” the Iron Man actor shared on her social media, adding, “This feels like the end of an era. He will be deeply missed by me and all who loved him. Rest in peace, Vava.”
Closer home, Bollywood icon Sonam Kapoor shared a picture of Valentino on her Instagram story with the caption, “The last of the titans. RIP.”
Valentino became popular for introducing the iconic shade of red named after himself, ‘Valentino Red’, back ion 1959, with a strapless tulle cocktail dress. The colour went on to become a staple in every c0llection of his since. According to the fashion house’s statement, the funeral will take place on Friday, January 23rd at the Basilica Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri, in Piazza della Repubblica 8 in Rome, at 11 am.
