The Red Devils may have endured hell this season, but manager Ruben Amorim promised Manchester United fans that “good days are coming” in a public apology he issued after their 2-0 win against Aston Villa on Sunday.
United concluded the Premier League season in 15th place, marking their worst finish since being relegated in 1974.
A defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final on Wednesday confirmed that United will miss European football next season for only the second time in 35 years.
Amorim, who took charge in November, accepted responsibility for his failure to revive the team’s fortunes in an address to supporters following a 2-0 win over Aston Villa in United’s final match of the season.

“I want to apologize for this season. I know you are really disappointed with me and with the team,” said the Portuguese coach.
“But now we have to make a choice. Either we stay stuck in the past because this season is over, or we stick together and move forward.
“Six months ago, after my first three games with two victories and one draw, I said to you, ‘the storm is coming.’ Today, after this disastrous season, I want to tell you the good days are coming.
“If there is one club in the world that can overcome any season, any disaster, it is our club, it is Manchester United.”
Earlier this week, Amorim stated that he was prepared to quit “without any compensation” if the club wished to proceed without him.
Ruben Amorim said if Manchester United no longer wanted him, he would quit “without any conversation about compensation” after his team’s painful Europa League final defeat to Tottenham.
The former Sporting Lisbon boss, who has won just six Premier League games at United, said he still believed in his ability to turn things around at Old Trafford but would walk if he was no longer wanted.
“If the board and the fans feel that I’m not the right guy, I will go the next day without any conversation about compensation,” he said.
“But I will not quit. I’m really confident in my job. And as you can see, I will not change anything in the way I do things.”
