Schools closed in several states amid heavy rains and IMD alerts.
Severe rainfall and floods are affecting many parts of the country, forcing authorities in several states to close schools and colleges for safety. The rain has given people some relief from the heat, but areas in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh are struggling with heavy waterlogging and flood-like conditions.
Rajasthan: In Jaipur and other parts of the state, incessant rains have caused widespread disruption. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more heavy showers on August 26. In view of the red alert, schools and colleges across 20 districts have been ordered shut.
Punjab: Authorities in Pathankot, Fazilka, Bathinda and Hoshiarpur have announced a holiday for all government and private schools due to the heavy rainfall forecast.
Himachal Pradesh: The IMD has sounded a red alert for extremely heavy rain on August 26 in districts including Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, Kullu, Hamirpur, Una and Bilaspur. In the capital Shimla, all schools and higher educational institutions have been ordered closed. Similar restrictions have been extended to Mandi, Manali, Una and Bilaspur. Officials said the move was taken as a precautionary measure amid the risk of landslides and flash floods.
Jammu: All government and private schools across the Jammu division will remain closed on August 26 due to adverse weather conditions, according to an official order issued by the administration.
States On Alert
The national capital and adjoining areas, including Noida and Greater Noida, witnessed heavy rainfall on Tuesday. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms and showers over the next two days. However, no decision has been announced yet on school closures in the region.
The weather office has issued an orange alert for Gujarat, Rajasthan and Haryana, warning of very heavy rainfall. A yellow alert has also been issued for Uttarakhand, Bihar, Assam, Meghalaya, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra, Arunachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Konkan and Goa.
With monsoon activity intensifying, state administrations have urged residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in vulnerable areas prone to flooding and landslides.
