Schools up to Class 8 in Bareilly are closed from December 18–20 due to severe cold and dense fog, while exams may continue as scheduled.

Bareilly School Holidays: Schools up to Class 8 in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly district will remain closed for three days due to severe cold and dense fog, the district administration announced on Wednesday. The closure will be effective from December 18 to December 20 and applies to all government, aided and private schools.

The decision was taken as cold wave conditions and persistent fog have been disrupting normal life in Bareilly and nearby areas for the past several days. According to officials, poor visibility and extremely low temperatures posed risks to young children, prompting the precautionary measure.

Basic Shiksha Adhikari Dr Vinita said the order was issued on the directions of District Magistrate Avinash Singh. She warned that strict action would be taken against any school found violating the closure order. However, schools where examinations are already scheduled during this period may conduct exams as per the pre-decided schedule, officials clarified.

Bareilly has been experiencing dense fog with little to no sunshine, especially during morning hours. Cold winds have further intensified the chill, slowing traffic and increasing the risk of road accidents. December 16 was recorded as the coldest day in the district in the last 10 years, with the maximum temperature dropping to 16.3 degrees Celsius.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for dense fog for the next three days. Officials said cold winds from the hills are likely to worsen the situation further, with no immediate relief expected.

The district administration has advised people to avoid unnecessary travel and take special care of children and the elderly during the ongoing cold spell.

Meanwhile, in Lucknow, the Uttar Pradesh government has revised school timings due to similar weather conditions. As per official orders, all schools from Class 1 to Class 12 across all boards will now operate only after 9 am, keeping student safety in mind.
