The Jammu and Kashmir government has ordered the closure of all schools in the Jammu region until August 30 due to heavy rainfall and flooding, prioritising the safety and well-being of students, teachers, and school staff. Director of School Education, Dr Naseem Javaid Chowdhary, issued the order on Thursday, instructing heads of institutions to consider conducting online classes, especially for students of Classes 9 to 12, wherever suitable infrastructure and internet connectivity are available.
After record rainfall caused significant disruption in the Jammu region over the past two days, the death toll from rain-related incidents rose to 45, most of whom were victims of a landslide on the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage route. However, with the rains easing on Wednesday, relief operations have gained momentum.
Schools remained closed for the third consecutive day on Thursday because of the ongoing weather conditions.
“Keeping the safety and well-being of students, teachers and staff as the highest priority, it is hereby ordered that all government and private schools across Jammu division shall remain closed up to 30th August,” the director stated in the order.
He advised heads of institutions to explore the feasibility of conducting online classes, particularly for Classes 9 to 12, wherever suitable infrastructure and internet connectivity are available.
“It is reiterated that all Chief Education Officers and Heads of Institutions must strictly adhere to the Standard Operating Procedures for reopening schools before resuming physical classes. All School Authorities must ensure thorough cleaning, sanitation, and safety inspections of school premises prior to reopening,” Chowdhary stated.
The situation is being continuously monitored, and further directions will be issued based on evolving weather and ground conditions, he added.
These measures have been implemented due to the continuous heavy rainfall across various parts of the Jammu division, causing multiple weather-induced disruptions that severely affect daily life and the functioning of educational institutions.
All schools in Punjab will also be closed on Saturday. Due to predictions of heavy rainfall by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), all government and private schools, colleges, and other educational institutes will remain closed in Punjab this week, Chief Minister, Bhagwant Mann, had announced earlier.
