Tahira Kashyap recently addressed stereotypes not just associated with women but also with a star wife. “I have hardly adhered to any stereotype to break any. Having said that, the stereotype of…if you are an actor’s wife, you got to be an interior designer…for some reason. I was like, why? That was a cliché,” the filmmaker said on the latest episode of In the Ring with Filmfare.
“A lot of women are breaking that. Another would be shopping and bags. I hate shopping. It is generally a stereotype for women. Every woman is different,” added Kashyap, who is married to actor Ayushmann Khurrana.
Dr Chandni Tugnait, MD (A.M) psychotherapist, founder and director, Gateway of Healing, concurred with Tahira Kashyap to suggest that, like her direct approach, the best response is to acknowledge and challenge these preconceptions openly.
“When society tries to box you into predetermined roles – whether as an actor’s wife, a professional’s spouse, or any other category – stay true to your authentic self. Rather than becoming defensive or aggressive, demonstrate through actions and achievements that stereotypes don’t define individual potential,” suggested Dr Tugnait.
According to the expert, these prejudices often stem from limited understanding and fear of the unknown. “Stay focused on personal growth while acknowledging that changing others’ perceptions takes time,” said Dr Tugnait.
Create visibility for diverse roles and choices within your community. “Most importantly, actively support others breaking conventional molds in their respective fields,” said Dr Tugnait.
