One of Australia’s leading higher education institutions, which is ranked among the world’s top 20, the University of New South Wales is all set to establish a campus in India.
Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan and his Australian counterpart Jason Clare jointly handed over the letter of intent (LoI) to University of New South Wales (UNSW) during the 3rd Australia-India Education and Skills Council (AIESC) meeting in New Delhi on Monday.
Pradhan welcomed UNSW to India, describing it as a premier global institution. He said the move will further strengthen collaborative opportunities between India and Australia in higher education.
“One of Australia’s premier universities and an academic institution ranked top-20 globally in the QS World University Rankings is set to establish a campus in India. Together with Minister Jason Clare handed over the LOI to the University of New South Wales on the sidelines of the 3rd AIESC. Congratulate UNSW and welcome them to India.”

Earlier, Pradhan met Clare and another Australian minister, Julian Hill. He highlighted discussions on expanding cooperation in education, innovation and research. Both ministers agreed to deepen engagements across all academic levels — from “pre-school to PhD”.
He stressed on India’s aim to build an AI-ready future workforce and to foster critical thinking among students. He added that both nations are working towards enhancing partnerships between higher education institutions, joint research funding in strategic sectors, and improving student mobility through smoother pathways for academic exchange.
The proposed UNSW campus is expected to significantly boost India-Australia educational ties, offering Indian students access to globally acclaimed academic programmes and research opportunities. The upcoming AIESC meeting is likely to outline a roadmap for joint initiatives, capacity development, and institutional linkages aimed at transforming India’s education ecosystem.
