Manchester City have reportedly reached an agreement with AC Milan to sign Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders, marking their first major acquisition of the summer transfer window.
The former Premier League champions will reportedly pay €55 million (£47 million) for the 26-year-old, who has agreed to a five-year contract, subject to final details.
City aim to finalise the transfer of the Netherlands international before the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, commencing on 14 June.
Reijnders joined AC Milan from AZ Alkmaar in 2023 and scored two goals for the Italian club during the 2023/24 season. He will strengthen Pep Guardiola’s midfield options following the departure of Kevin De Bruyne.
The veteran Belgium international is unlikely to feature in the Club World Cup, with a transfer to Serie A champions Napoli appearing increasingly likely.
Midfielder Mateo Kovacic will miss the tournament after undergoing surgery for an Achilles injury.
Guardiola’s squad endured a disappointing 2023/24 season, finishing third in the Premier League and failing to secure a trophy for the first time in eight years.
Last week, City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak acknowledged that the club “probably should have been more aggressive” in the transfer market before the season.
Guardiola’s team will participate in the expanded 32-team Club World Cup as defending champions, having won the competition in its previous format in Saudi Arabia two years ago.
They will begin their campaign against Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca in Philadelphia on 18 June.
The transfer window is open until 10 June to enable clubs to sign players for the Club World Cup. It will reopen on 16 June.
