Despite being blind, Nilratan Bala is lighting the way in education and has become a role model in society on Teachers’ Day. A teacher in the Habra Kumra Gram Panchayat area in West Bengal, Bala, although blind, has been guiding young students towards education.

He had some vision for a few years after birth, but due to physical issues, he eventually lost his sight completely. Even in challenging circumstances, he did not give up. With unwavering determination and confidence, he pursued his studies.

Since childhood, Bala dreamt of becoming a teacher, a dream that came true after much struggle. To earn a living, he sold incense sticks on trains and buses while preparing for a teaching job. He passed the school teaching exam, but it took a long time to receive his appointment letter. Finally, through court intervention, he joined as a teacher in July 2023. He currently teaches at Kumra GSFP School.

Although he relies solely on a stick, students guide him to the classroom and back to the teacher’s room. He has a blind wife at home, and they depend on each other in their daily lives. Nilratan Babu uses Braille books to teach his students. While he faces no difficulty in teaching, writing poses a challenge, so he uses the help of good students to write on the blackboard. Both the students and other teachers are proud of him.

The students say that despite his blindness, there is no lack in his teaching. Instead, he serves as an inspiration for their daily struggles. On Teachers’ Day, we must honour such an indomitable person who, despite not having sight, is spreading the light of knowledge in others’ lives!
