An undisguised test mule of the Volkswagen Tayron was recently spotted for the first time in India. Slated to launch here in the latter half of 2025 as a successor to the now-discontinued Tiguan Allspace, the Tayron will mark Volkswagen’s re-entry in the three-row premium SUV space.
- Volkswagen Tayron to be locally assembled; launch scheduled for late 2025
- The three-row SUV’s exterior and interior design borrows heavily from the Tiguan R-Line
- India-spec Tayron expected to come with 204hp, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine

Styling doesn’t stray too far from the Tiguan R-Line

The spy shots reveal that the India-spec Tayron will share most of its styling cues with the new-gen Tiguan R-Line that was recently launched in India, albeit with a 231mm increase in length. Up front, the Tayron has sleek LED headlights bridged by a black grille cover, and lower down, the large mesh-patterned air dam looks very similar to that of the Tiguan R-Line.
The Tayron test mule even has the same 19-inch alloy wheels and rear bumper design as its five-seater sibling. However, the rear light bar is slightly slimmer and has a different LED signature than the Tiguan’s setup. An ‘R’ badge can be seen underneath the Tayron’s rearview mirror as well, suggesting that Volkswagen could offer the three-row SUV in a sporty variant.
Volkswagen Tayron interior and features

While no spy shots of the Tayron’s interior were procured, the similarities to the Tiguan are expected to continue here as well. The Tayron’s cabin sports a largely button-less layout, with a 15-inch infotainment touchscreen taking prominence on the dashboard, as well as a 10.25-inch all-digital instrument cluster ahead of the driver. Elsewhere, the feature list will likely include a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, 3-zone climate control, wireless phone charging, Level 2 ADAS, and more.
Much larger boot than Tiguan
Expectedly, the biggest change to the Tayron’s cabin is the addition of an extra row of seats at the back. Boot space stands at 345 litres with all three rows up, and with the third row folded down, the Tayron’s carrying capacity increases to 850 litres – 198 litres up from the Tiguan.
Volkswagen Tayron engine and gearbox
Powertrain shared with new Kodiaq and Tiguan R-Line
Under the hood, the Tayron is anticipated to use the same 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine as the Tiguan R-Line and new Skoda Kodiaq, developing 204hp and 320Nm of torque. The unit will be paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox that sends power to all four wheels. In the Tiguan R-Line, this powertrain is good for a 0-100kph time of 7.1 seconds and a 229kph top speed, but the Tayron’s higher weight is expected to drop these figures slightly.
Volkswagen Tayron India launch details and rivals
Tayron to be sold as a CKD model in India

As mentioned before, the Volkswagen Tayron is scheduled to launch in India later this year. However, where the Tiguan R-Line is sold here as a fully imported CBU (completely built unit), the Tayron will be locally assembled as a CKD (completely knocked down) model at Volkswagen’s Aurangabad plant.
Therefore, the Tayron will likely be priced more competitively than the Tiguan R-Line and provide stiffer competition to three-row rivals like the Skoda Kodiaq, Jeep Meridian, Toyota Fortuner, and Citroen C5 Aircross.
