Even as the row over Marathi stokes Maharashtra politics, two prominent educational institutes — the University of Mumbai (MU) and Somaiya Vidyavihar University – have been silently running courses to teach ‘Communicative Marathi’ for years.

MU’s Certificate In Communicative Marathi Course
It is designed to introduce beginners to the Marathi language and equip them with basic communication skills for everyday use. This programme focuses on developing the speaking, listening, reading, and writing abilities required to interact confidently in various common situations, both in personal and professional settings.
How does MU teach Communicative Marathi?
The MU offers various levels. The course uses authentic texts, audio, and audio-visual materials to enhance learning and provide practical examples of language use. According to the MU, The course utilises an approach that integrates all aspects of language learning (speaking, listening, reading, writing) to facilitate effective communication. The curriculum emphasises applying language skills in real-life situations and contexts. It incorporates cultural insights and awareness to provide a holistic understanding of the language and its cultural context. The course is taught by certified and experienced instructors who guide learners through the learning process.
MU Communicative Marathi course has different levels
Level 1: This is at the Certificate level and teaches the introduction to the Marathi language, basic vocabulary, and sentence structure.
Level 2: It is at the Diploma level and focuses on everyday life interactions, small and large writing, and conversation.
Level 3: This is at the Advanced Diploma level and teaches more complex communication and language use.
Level 4: Advanced Diploma II in Communicative Marathi. It builds upon the foundation established in previous levels. It focuses on enhancing communication skills in practical contexts, including personal information, family matters, shopping, cultural settings, and employment-related scenarios. The course also incorporates cultural awareness and sensitivity to Marathi traditions and customs.
Level 5: Advanced Diploma III in Communicative Marathi. This level is a continuation of the communicative approach, further refining language skills and expanding communicative competence. It aims to make Marathi a viable second, third, or foreign language by integrating methodologies, tools, and techniques used in teaching various languages, including foreign languages.
MU Communicative Marathi course for special target groups
It also offers courses for target groups such as Marathi for nurses, Marathi for rickshaw and taxi drivers, bank employees and official Marathi.
MU’s study material
The department offers Links for the App, books for six levels of Marathi and for 4 target groups along with audiovisuals for learning Marathi. These are 18 books and 1 App.

SOMAIYA VIDYAVIHAR UNIVERSITY’S COMMUNICATIVE MARATHI COURSE
The main aim of this course is to introduce the learners to the basic knowledge of the language, its script, phonetics, grammar as well as cultural elements. The course shall involve diverse exercises pertaining to all the four language skills, i.e. reading, listening, speaking and writing. Along with the practice of language structures, their application in authentic situations shall also be dealt with.
