Lando Norris stands on the cusp of a maiden Formula One Championship as he enters the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi with a 12-point lead over four-time reigning champion Max Verstappen.
Ahead of the race, Norris vowed to do everything in his power at the Yas Marina Circuit to in his bid to get his hands on the coveted title.
“The final race, Abu Dhabi. I’m excited. Last year, we had the Constructors’ Championship to go for, and this year, we go in as Champions, with another important Championship to win. It’s amazing to see how much we’ve achieved,” Norris said.
It’s been an incredible season. We have an incredible car. I’m proud of everyone in the team. Thank you to all of our fans. We’ve got one more race, and we’ll give it everything,” the McLaren driver said.
Verstappen, who has won five races since the summer break, one more than all other competitors combined, ensured the title race would go on until the very last day of the season with his win at Qatar.
With this victory, Verstappen’s total points for the season reached 396. Norris leads the championship with 408 points, and Piastri is in third place with 392 points, making the final race in Abu Dhabi decisive.
Norris can clinch the championship if he finishes on the podium in Abu Dhabi. Verstappen can secure his fifth consecutive title by winning the race, provided Norris does not finish in the top three. Piastri has a slim chance of becoming the champion if he wins in Abu Dhabi and Norris finishes outside the top five.
Oscar Piastri, Norris’ teammate, finished second behind Verstappen, while Carlos Sainz of Williams took the final podium spot, with Norris finishing in fourth place.
