Karnataka Assembly Opposition Leader R Ashoka criticised the state government on Thursday, hours after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah suspended senior police officials following the Bengaluru stampede that killed 11 people on Wednesday.

On X, Ashoka questioned the Chief Minister’s decision to suspend the officers, given Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar’s earlier praise for their actions.

“Yesterday, DCM @DKShivakumar praised and complimented police officers. Today, CM @siddaramaiah has suspended the Bengaluru police commissioner, additional commissioner, Deputy Commissioner (Central), ACP and other top officers. What is happening in @INKarnataka Govt?” he posted, tagging Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, senior party leader Jairam Ramesh, and Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi.

The Karnataka government suspended the city’s police commissioner and three other senior officers a day after DK Shivakumar commended the police for managing the large crowds during the RCB celebrations.

“Again, I’m telling on record. I should compliment my Police officers…morning also, they wanted to have a procession, they wanted to bring a vehicle from the airport itself…Police guided us not to…that’s why I rushed to the airport and ensured nothing went wrong…in Vidhana Soudha, also we were very cautious…,” DK Shivakumar had stated.

“We never expected such an incident to happen. No political party or official wanted this. They did their best, but there was an uncontrollable crowd,” he added.

Following the incident, CM Siddaramaiah ordered the arrest of representatives from Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), DNA event management, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) Administrative Committee. An FIR has been filed against them on charges of criminal negligence.

“The stampede during the RCB celebrations is saddening, and condolences were offered to the bereaved. Today’s (June 5) cabinet meeting included a serious discussion about this tragic incident. Decisions were made following the discussion,” Siddaramaiah stated on Thursday.
