Italy and Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma picked up the Yachin Trophy for the Best Goalkeeper of the Year at the Ballon d’Or 2025 Gala on Tuesday and opened up about his move away from former side PSG after helping the French side to their maiden UEFA Champions League title.
Donnarumma, who was deemed surplus to requirements at the Parisian club by head coach Luis Enrique, revealed that he would have liked to remain at the Ligue 1 side, but thanked Man City and Guaridola for trusting him.
“When you have shared a lot with people and spent a lot of time and made friends, it’s difficult to leave,” the Italian said.
“This is wonderful, congratulations to the whole team, without them I wouldn’t be here, it was the whole team,” the 26-year-old said.
“It’s a great honour to win the Yashin Trophy for a second time in my career. It’s a team game but this is a personal award that all goalkeepers want to get their hands on so I’m delighted to have been selected by the panel,” he continued.
Donnarumma was roped in by Guardiola following PSG axing for a transfer fee of 26 million Euros and the Italian custodian voiced that he sought to improve under the watchful eyes of the Spanish tactician.
“There are a lot of brilliant goalkeepers around the world, so this is incredibly special to me. I am pleased with my performances over the last year and the trophies I have won, but I know I can still improve and that’s a major reason why I chose to move to Man City,” the shot-stopper added.
“I am now fully focused on working with Pep Guardiola and his staff to develop my game even further and helping my new team to even more success,” Donnarumma said.
