Commonwealth Games bronze winner Jaismine Lamboria edged closer to her first World Championships medal by advancing to the quarterfinals, while two other Indian boxers were eliminated from the competition.

In her third World Championships, Jaismine delivered an outstanding performance in the women’s 57kg round of 16, defeating Brazil’s two-time Olympian Jucielen Cerqueira Romeu 5-0 late Sunday night. The bout was a repeat of their gold medal clash at the Astana tournament in July, which Jaismine had narrowly won.

Jaismine concluded the opening round strongly with a late surge of punches following a relatively quiet start. Romeu was more aggressive in the second round, pressing forward, but the Indian boxer responded smartly. Utilizing her significant height advantage, Jaismine countered from a distance. In the final round, she landed clean scoring shots to secure the victory.

With this win, Jaismine is now just one victory away from earning a World Championships medal. She will next face Asian Under-22 champion Khumorabonu Mamajonova of Uzbekistan.

What About The Men At World Boxing Championships 2025?

In the men’s draw, Abhinash Jamwal also progressed, advancing to the 65kg round of 16 with a dominant 5-0 win over Mexico’s Hugo Barron.

However, it was a disappointing outcome for Sanamacha Chanu (70kg) and Sakshi Chaudhary (54kg), who both exited in the round of 16. Sanamacha lost to Kazakhstan’s Natalya Bogdanova, while Sakshi was decisively beaten by Turkey’s Hatice Akbas, the Paris Olympics silver medallist and two-time World Championships medallist.

Sakshi’s inexperience was evident against the technically superior Akbas, who landed clean and authoritative strikes throughout the contest on Monday. Sakshi’s overly aggressive start backfired, as she was penalized two points in the opening round for punching after the referee had called for a break. Struggling with the power of her shots, Sakshi found it difficult to assert herself and was trailing significantly on all scorecards. She showed some promise in the final round, finding her range and landing a solid blow at the bell, but the contest had already been decided.

Later on Monday, Sachin (60kg) will face Biibars Zhexen of Kazakhstan, Sumit Kundu (75kg) will compete against Rami Kiwan of Bulgaria, Narender (90+kg) will take on Diego Lenzi of Italy, while Neeraj Phogat will confront local hopeful Sacha Hickey of England in the women’s 65kg category.
