In a recent update, an Air India flight from Phuket to Delhi was hit by severe mid-air turbulence on Tuesday. The incident left 12 people, including passengers and crew members, with minor injuries. The incidentIn a statement, Air India confirmed the incident, saying, “Air India confirms that flight AI2379, operating from Phuket to Delhi on 4 August, experienced a brief in-flight turbulence-related event during cruise, resulting in a momentary change in altitude.”The airline spokesperson further added, “There have been no serious injuries as of now. A small number of passengers and crew members with minor injuries requiring medical assessment have been taken to a medical facility at the airport for precautionary examination and care by Air India’s airport team and medical personnel.”Initial reports indicated that 12 people suffered minor injuries. Some eyewitness accounts suggested that the aircraft experienced a sudden loss of altitude, although Air India has officially described it as a brief turbulence-related event.Why turbulence can cause injuriesTurbulence is among the most common in-flight occurrences. It is caused by unstable air currents or thunderstorms or mountain waves or changes in jet streams.
