The film set box office opening records upon its release and went on to earn over Rs 200 crores worldwide. It also received recognition for its technical work, winning honours at major award ceremonies, including the National Film Awards and the Filmfare Awards.

Fifteen years later, Ra.One continues to be discussed for its scale and technological ambition. While the film attempted to bring a high-tech superhero universe to Indian screens at a time when the genre was still developing, its approach to visual effects and computer-generated imagery has remained an important part of conversations around Indian sci-fi cinema.

To mark the film’s 15th anniversary, director Anubhav Sinha and Benaras Mediaworks took to social media to look back at the journey of creating the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer. Reflecting on the challenges and ambition behind the project, Sinha wrote, “2011 wasn’t ready for it. Somewhere between magic and madness, we made the future.”

Released at a time when large-scale visual effects-driven superhero films were still relatively uncommon in India, Ra.One sought to explore a different kind of cinematic storytelling. From its futuristic costumes and CGI-heavy sequences to its action set-pieces, the film represented an attempt to expand the technical possibilities of mainstream Hindi cinema.

The project required the team to work on a scale that was still emerging within the Indian film industry. Its ambitions extended beyond a conventional superhero narrative, with an emphasis on creating a distinct visual world for audiences.

Over the years, Ra.One has continued to attract attention for its technical experimentation and its attempt to bring a science-fiction spectacle to Indian audiences. As the film completes 15 years, Sinha’s reflection revisits the ambition behind a project that sought to push the boundaries of visual effects and superhero storytelling in Indian cinema.
