Schools in five districts of Jharkhand, including Ranchi, will remain closed on Friday following a forecast of heavy rainfall by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), news agency PTI quoted an official as saying.
All educational institutions in Ranchi, Khunti, and West Singhbhum districts will remain shut on Friday. Meanwhile, in East Singhbhum and Saraikela-Kharswan districts, schools will suspend classes up to Class 8 as a precautionary measure.
Schools in Ranchi and Khunti were already closed on Thursday due to continuous rainfall that began on Wednesday.
The IMD has issued a ‘red’ alert—indicating heavy to extremely heavy rainfall—for Ranchi from 8:30 am on Thursday until 8:30 am on Friday.
In light of the forecast and for the safety of students, the Ranchi district administration on Thursday extended the closure of schools for another day. “Considering the likelihood of intense rainfall and prioritising student safety, Ranchi Deputy Commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri has directed that all schools in the district, from Kindergarten to Class 12, remain closed on June 20,” the official order stated.
It further warned that any school found violating the order will be held responsible under relevant provisions of the Disaster Management Act, 2005.
Similar orders have been issued in Khunti and West Singhbhum districts, where all government and private schools up to Class 12 will remain closed on Friday.
In East Singhbhum and Saraikela-Kharswan districts, authorities announced that classes up to Class 8 will be suspended on Friday due to the anticipated heavy rainfall.

Ranchi recorded a staggering 216.1 mm of rainfall between 8:30 am on Wednesday and 5:30 am on Thursday.
The intense rainfall across the state has already resulted in the deaths of four people—including two schoolboys and a 10-year-old girl—at different locations. The downpour has also led to significant damage to infrastructure in various districts, according to officials.
The southwest monsoon, which entered Jharkhand on Tuesday, had spread across the entire state by Wednesday, bringing widespread showers expected to persist through June 20.
