Volvo S90 discontinued in India

The Volvo S90 midsize luxury sedan is no longer on sale in India as Volvo India has delisted it from its website. The facelifted version of the S90 was launched in India in October 2021; globally, the S90 was recently updated with yet another facelift this April. This leaves Volvo with an SUV-only line-up in India.

  1. S90 was available with a 2.0-litre mild-hybrid petrol in India
  2. Was sold in a single fully loaded B5 trim
  3. Rivalled the Mercedes E-Class and BMW 5 Series

Volvo S90: a brief recap

The Volvo S90 was offered in India with a sole 250hp, 2.0-litre, four-cylinder mild-hybrid petrol engine and in a single fully loaded B5 trim. It came pretty well equipped with features like a 360-degree camera, four-zone climate control, a 19-speaker 1,400W Bowers and Wilkins audio system, massaging and ventilated front seats, an ADAS suite and air suspension.

The S90 had a feature-equipped and classy interior.

The S90 was locally assembled in India, and its last recorded price was Rs 68.25 lakh (ex-showroom). However, with newer generations of the E-Class and 5 Series, the S90 was left behind in terms of tech and powertrain options, and, as a result, sales were unsurprisingly low.

Volvo S90: will there be a replacement?

Volvo has already updated the S90 globally with a second facelift, which gets revised exterior design, a larger touchscreen with new tech, and updated mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain options. Volvo also revealed an all-electric sibling called the ES90 this March, which gets up to 700km range from a 106kWh battery, but the company has not hinted at the launch of either model in India.

The S90 received a second facelift this April.

In the meantime, the company is gearing up to launch the all-electric EX30 SUV in India by the end of 2025, and is even considering local assembly. This will be followed by the flagship EX90 all-electric SUV sometime next year. The brand is, therefore, clearly focused on its SUV portfolio.
