Fraudulent business in education is spreading rapidly across India. The network of fake universities has expanded from eight to 12 states, with the number of such institutions increasing from 20 to 32 in the past two years. In response to this growing threat, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a strict warning to students and parents to stay alert.
Recent data shows that fake universities have become active in new states such as Haryana, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, and Arunachal Pradesh. As many as 12 of the 32 fake universities are operating in Delhi alone, with some situated just a few meters from the UGC headquarters.
Currently, 12 fake universities have been identified in Delhi, 4 in Uttar Pradesh, 2 each in Kerala, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, and 1 each in Haryana, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, and Arunachal Pradesh.
The commission has strongly advised students against seeking admission to such institutions. The UGC has also recommended checking the list of fake universities posted on its official website before taking admission. Degrees from these institutions are not valid, jeopardising students’ futures.
These fake institutions are now using the names and logos of foreign universities to appear legitimate. Recently, Columbia University in Sri Lanka wrote to the UGC complaining that a fake university was operating in Maharashtra using its name and logo. Following this, the UGC once again alerted students and parents.
The UGC has reiterated the importance of verifying the legitimacy of any university before seeking admission. A list of recognised and fake institutions is available on the commission’s official website. This network of fake universities spreading across the country has become a serious challenge to the education system. If strict action is not taken promptly, the future of thousands of students could be at risk.
