Canadian Mixed Martial Artist Gillian Robertson gears up to take on Amanda Lemos in the Women’s Strawweight bout at the UFC Fight Night, slated to be held at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada on the 15th of March, as ‘The Savage’ looks to improve on her fight record that stands at a win-loss ratio of 2:1 ahead of the co-main event.

In an EXCLUSIVE to News18.com, Robertson opened up about a variety of topics including her famous nickname, her inspirations and aspirations.

Would like to start this off with a question about you nickname. ‘The Savage’. How did it come to be and is there a particular story behind it?

So when I had my first amateur MMA fight when I was 18, my coach wrote an e-mail to our whole team saying how I’m as quiet as a mouse, but when I walked into the cage, I turned into a savage and it just kind of stuck after that. So yeah, it was just my team started calling me it after that.

How was the MMA climate in Canada like growing up and when you were getting started as compared to how it has shaped up now?

So I didn’t start MMA until I was in Florida. I didn’t start till I was 16. So I guess I never really got to experience the MMA climate in Canada as much when I was a kid.

Your win-loss ratio comes in at around 2:1 which is brilliant cause you’re winning twice as many as you don’t. How do you prep for bouts and what runs through your head in the lead up to the fight.

I guess I’m just always excited to be in there. I’m excited to go in and try to finish and put on a performance to show what I’ve been working on.

How do you react to your wins, as in how do you celebrate and how do you react to defeats?

Honestly, for both, it’s kind of the same. I usually go out, have a good night that night. Next two weeks I train when I want, eat what I want, and then after that we’re right back to work. We’re always back to the focus

Is there someone in particular you look up to or idolise and model your fighting style after?

I don’t really model my fighting style after her, but I definitely look up to Amanda Nunez a lot. I feel like she’s one of she is the best woman to ever step in a cage and I just want to have a legacy like hers.
