If you’re looking to get into the SUV bodystyle of vehicles, the Hyundai Exter and Tata Punch come across as potential entry-point options. For MY26, both models come with updated looks and pack a long list of features. So, which of the two in their respective top-end trims is a better value proposition? We compare the Exter HX10 and Punch Accomplished+ S trims to find out.
Hyundai Exter vs Tata Punch: Exterior features
Exter now gets a matte finish paint option, while Punch gets all LED headlamps and fog lamps
| Keyless entry | Yes | Yes |
Both sub-compact SUVs are quite close here, but the Punch edges ahead thanks to the inclusion of important features such as LED headlamps and fog lamps, cornering lights, puddle lamps and rain-sensing wipers. The Punch’s alloy wheels are even an inch larger than those of the Exter. While both SUVs get monotone and dual-tone colour options, only the Exter gets a matte finish option.
Hyundai Exter vs Tata Punch: Interior features
Bigger screens and comfort features are only seen on the Punch
On the inside, the Punch trumps the Exter in several areas. Not only does the Punch offer larger displays, an air purifier and a superior sound system, it even enhances the comfort and convenience factor via armrests for both first- and second-row occupants – a conspicuous omission from the Exter.
Hyundai Exter vs Tata Punch: Safety features
Exter gets a dash cam, while Punch gets a 360-degree camera
| Dash cam | Yes | No |
| Rear defogger | Yes | Yes |
| ABS with EBD | Yes | Yes |
While both the Exter and Punch cover the basics with safety kit like 6 airbags, rear parking sensors, hill hold assist and ESC, the Punch goes further with a 360-degree camera and blind view monitor. Meanwhile, the Exter gets a dash cam, which the Punch misses out on. Moreover, the Tata Punch has secured a 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating, while the Exter has no safety rating attributed to it.
Hyundai Exter vs Tata Punch: Driving features
Punch is the only one here with drive modes and idle start/stop
The Punch notably features a couple of drive modes, while the Exter gets none. Although not always favourable, idle engine start/stop is available for Punch owners and can help save fuel during extended traffic stops. However, both SUVs come with paddle shifters for their AMT variants, cruise control and dual CNG tanks that do not harshly eat into boot space.
Hyundai Exter vs Tata Punch: Powertrains
Punch offers multiple powertrain options
| Cylinder count | 4 | 3 |
The Exter’s top trim is solely available with the 1.2-litre petrol engine mated with a 5-speed AMT gearbox. The Punch, however, offers more diversified options in top-end guise, including a 1.2 naturally aspirated petrol,1.2 petrol-CNG and a 1.2 turbo-petrol. A 5-speed AMT gearbox is available on the naturally aspirated petrol and petrol-CNG engines, with the former also offered with a 5-speed manual. Meanwhile, the turbo-petrol is paired to a 6-speed manual transmission only.
Hyundai Exter vs Tata Punch: Prices
Punch top end is Rs 42,000 more affordable
| Petrol AMT price (Rs, lakh) | 9.41 | 9.54 |
| Turbo-petrol MT price (Rs, lakh) | N/A | 9.79 |
| CNG MT price (Rs, lakh) | N/A | 10.54 |
Pricing is a win for the Punch, with its top-spec trim starting at about Rs 42,000 cheaper than the Exter. This is because Tata offers a manual gearbox with the naturally aspirated petrol, while the Exter only offers it with a 5-speed AMT.
Even so, the Punch Accomplished+ S petrol-AMT costs just Rs 13,000 more than the equivalent Exter variant, while the turbo-petrol MT configuration commands a Rs 44,000 premium. Not to mention, the Punch Accomplished+ S is sold in CNG-AMT guise too, with the Exter SX(O) Connect offering no equivalent powertrain.
Hyundai Exter vs Tata Punch: Whose top trim should you buy?
Punch offers better value overall
Given its numerous feature advantages, stronger and diverse powertrain offerings and more accessible price point, the Tata Punch facelift beats the Hyundai Exter on paper. The Exter may be more affordable in petrol-AMT guise, but the added features on the Punch justify the premium it demands.
