The San Antonio Spurs wrapped up their first-round series with a 114-95 win over the Portland Trail Blazers in Game 5, sealing a 4-1 victory and moving on without much late drama.
Comfortable From Start to Finish
Short story short, San Antonio controlled the game from the opening tip.
After their comeback win in Game 4, where they erased a 19-point deficit, the Spurs took a different route this time — building an early lead and never letting Portland settle. The advantage stretched to 28 points at one stage, with the Spurs heading into halftime up 65-45.
Wembanyama Does Enough
Wembanyama didn’t need to dominate but just needed to be steady.
The 22-year-old finished with 17 points, 14 rebounds, and six blocks, anchoring both ends of the floor in his second game back after missing time with a concussion.
His presence alone disrupted Portland’s offense, particularly in the paint.
Late in the game, with Portland threatening a comeback, Wembanyama delivered two key blocks to halt any momentum.
Fox Closes The Door
De’Aaron Fox handled the finishing touches — scoring 21 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter — and stepped up just as Portland made a push.
The Trail Blazers briefly cut a 20-point deficit down to single digits with an 11-0 run, but the Spurs responded quickly to shut it down.
For Portland, Deni Avdija led the scoring with 22 points, but the team struggled from deep, shooting just 23% from three-point range.
What’s Next
The win marks San Antonio’s first playoff series victory since 2017, back when Kawhi Leonard’s injury killed all momentum for an upset of the then-unstoppable Golden State Warriors.
As the second seed in the Western Conference, the Spurs now advance to the semifinals, keeping alive their push for a sixth NBA title and their first since 2014.
San Antonio will face the winner of the series between the Denver Nuggets and the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Minnesota currently leads that matchup 3-2, with Game 6 set to take place on Thursday.
