A surprise visit by MLA Kamlesh Thakur to a Kangra school exposed poor hygiene, staff shortages and low admissions, prompting on-the-spot orders for repairs and strict warnings
Taking a firm stance, MLA Kamlesh Thakur directed concerned departments to address the issues without delay.
MLA Kamlesh Thakur, wife of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, made an unannounced visit to the CBSE Government Model Senior Secondary School in Dhalyara, located in Dehra of Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh. The visit was not pre-scheduled; she reportedly stopped by while passing through the area to assess conditions on the ground.
During the inspection, the MLA expressed strong displeasure over the unhygienic environment and lack of maintenance across the campus. Classrooms and premises were found to be unclean, prompting her to reprimand staff members on the spot. She questioned how such conditions could persist despite substantial government funding.
Highlighting that nearly Rs 1 crore is spent annually on the school, Kamlesh Thakur stated that such negligence would not be tolerated. She sharply asked staff whether they would maintain their own homes in a similar state, underscoring the gap between expenditure and upkeep.
Declining Admissions And Lack Of Facilities
Despite operating under the CBSE curriculum, the school is witnessing a near halt in admissions. The MLA noted that inadequate infrastructure, including the absence of proper seating arrangements, is discouraging students from enrolling. The situation has raised concerns about the institution’s overall functioning and appeal.
The inspection also revealed a severe shortage of staff, with several key positions, including the principal’s, vacant. This, officials indicated, has directly affected the quality of education and administrative efficiency within the school.
Strict Directions To Authorities
Taking a firm stance, Kamlesh Thakur directed concerned departments to address the issues without delay. She warned that any further negligence would invite strict action. She also made it clear that if the management is unable to handle responsibilities, it must report the matter immediately.
To expedite action, the MLA summoned officials from the Public Works Department, electricity department, and other agencies to the school premises. She instructed them to initiate immediate repair and maintenance work to restore basic facilities.
Direct Remarks To Acting Principal
In a pointed exchange, she questioned the acting principal about the deteriorating conditions, recalling their past as classmates. She remarked that the institution had been well-maintained earlier and questioned the reasons behind its current state.
She also warned that she could document the situation and escalate it to higher authorities if improvements were not made.
Kamlesh Thakur noted that poor conditions in government schools create a negative perception among students and parents, making it appear as though authorities are not taking responsibility. She emphasised that cleanliness and upkeep must be ensured at the institutional level rather than relying on top leadership.
The MLA also announced that a modern building for the Rajiv Gandhi Day Boarding School in Dhalyara will be constructed soon, with the tender process already completed. The project is expected to involve an investment worth several crores.
Concluding her visit, Kamlesh Thakur reiterated that lapses in the education system would not be overlooked. She indicated that such surprise inspections would continue in the future to ensure accountability and improvements across institutions.
