And in true fairytale fashion, they didn’t even need to be on the pitch when it happened.
Title Sealed… From the Sofa
Despite a 3-1 defeat away to FC Basel on Saturday, Thun’s fate was sealed 24 hours later.
FC St. Gallen’s 3-0 loss at home to FC Sion left them 11 points behind with just three games remaining, a gap that’s mathematically impossible to close.

It’s not the most conventional way to win a title, especially given Thun’s recent loss of form — four defeats in their last five games — but their earlier dominance did all the heavy lifting.
From Tiny Budget to Massive Glory
What makes this triumph even more staggering is the scale of it.
Based in a town of just 45,000 people, Thun only returned to the top flight last season. Their transfer spend? A modest $470,000, among the lowest in the league.
A fast start laid the foundation, and even as pressure mounted in the second half of the campaign, Thun held their nerve long enough to build an unassailable lead.
A Historic Leap Forward
Thun’s history has been modest at best. After first reaching the top division in 1954, they bounced between leagues for decades. Stability only arrived in the early 2000s.
Their previous high point? A second-place finish in 2005, behind Basel, followed by a memorable UEFA Champions League run where they stunned Sparta Prague and pushed Arsenal to the limit.
Now, they’ve gone one better.
By lifting the title, Thun have also booked a return to the Champions League, their first appearance since that unforgettable 2005 campaign.
