Affogato is a simple Italian coffee dessert prepared by pouring hot espresso over vanilla gelato or vanilla ice cream. The contrast of hot coffee and cold ice cream creates a creamy drink-dessert that comes together in minutes. This recipe can be made with espresso or strong instant coffee, making it easy for everyone. You only need two main ingredients and no special preparation. It works well as a quick dessert or an after-meal coffee treat.
About Affogato Recipe
Affogato, also called “affogato al caffè,” is one of the easiest coffee desserts you can make at home. It is traditionally made with a shot of espresso poured over vanilla gelato or Ice Cream.
The word “affogato” means “drowned” in Italian. Here, the gelato or ice cream is drowned in hot espresso just before serving.

The first time I had affogato was at a fine dining Italian restaurant. When I asked the server what it was, he simply said it was an ice cream dessert with hot coffee.
I initially thought it would taste something like a hot chocolate sundae, but it was completely different.
The espresso tasted slightly bitter on its own, but together with the melting ice cream, it tasted creamy, balanced and really good.
This affogato recipe uses vanilla ice cream because its creamy texture and sweet taste balance the bitterness of coffee well. You can make it with freshly brewed espresso or strong instant coffee.
Since only a few ingredients are used, the quality of the coffee and ice cream makes a noticeable difference. For a stronger coffee flavor, add slightly more instant coffee or use a dark roast espresso.
Affogato is best made and served one serving at a time. The hot espresso has to be poured fresh over the ice cream just before serving for the best taste and texture.
The ice cream slowly melts into the coffee, creating a creamy texture. You can serve it in a small glass, mug or dessert bowl depending on your preference.

How to Make Affogato (Stepwise)
1. Using an ice cream scoop, add 1 large scoop or about ½ cup vanilla ice cream.
You can also add 2 smaller scoops if you prefer. I used a scoop that measures about ⅓ cup.

2. Transfer the ice cream to a serving glass or bowl.

3. Prepare the coffee. Brew 25 to 30 ml espresso in an espresso machine.
If making with instant coffee, mix 1 to 1½ teaspoons instant espresso powder or instant coffee with 2 tablespoons hot water. Stir very well until dissolved. For a stronger flavor, add a bit more instant coffee.

4. Pour the hot espresso or strong coffee directly over the ice cream.

5. Serve affogato immediately while the coffee is hot and the ice cream is still cold and creamy.

Serving Suggestions & Storage
Affogato tastes best when served immediately after assembling. The hot coffee and cold ice cream create the best texture and flavor contrast when freshly made.
Serve it as an after-dinner dessert, evening coffee treat or small café-style dessert.
You can top it with chocolate shavings, cocoa powder, chopped nuts or a drizzle of chocolate sauce if you like.
This recipe is not suitable for storage once assembled because the ice cream melts quickly.
Helpful Tips
- Coffee strength: Use strong coffee for the best flavor. Mild coffee may not give a balanced coffee flavor.
- Instant coffee option: Instant espresso powder gives a deeper coffee flavor compared to regular instant coffee.
- Ice cream choice: Vanilla ice cream works best, but you can also use coffee, chocolate or caramel ice cream or gelato.
- Serving timing: Always pour the coffee just before serving so the ice cream keeps its shape and texture.
- Glass or bowl: Serve in a chilled glass or small dessert bowl for a café-style presentation.
