Star Brazilian footballer Neymar was on Wednesday banned for two games in the national league under the ‘Vinicius Law’, after he was seen covering his mouth while speaking to an opponent last week.

The incident took place during Santos’ game against Bahia last weekend. The tribunal ruled that Neymar had breached the protocol named after Vinicius Junior, known as the ‘Vinicius Law’.

Earlier this year, Vinicius accused Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni of racially abusing him during a Champions League game while concealing his mouth with his shirt.

Neymar was handed the suspension on Wednesday and will serve a three-game ban. The first of those is for an accumulation of yellow cards and the other two are for covering his mouth.

Neymar will miss Wednesday’s Brazilian league clash against Palmeiras because of the suspension for accumulated yellow cards and isn’t expected to return to action until late November.

Neymar and Santos have the option to appeal the suspension imposed for covering his mouth.

Neymar’s 2026 campaign has been disrupted by recurring injuries, despite scoring eight goals in 15 appearances in Brazil’s Serie A.

Neymar’s form early in the year earned him a recall to Brazil’s FIFA World Cup team, but an injury-enforced absence from the opening games hampered his opportunities to make an impact on the global stage.

Neymar made just two substitute appearances at the FIFA World Cup, scoring a penalty against Norway. But his effort proved insufficient as Brazil were eliminated in the Round of 16 after the loss to their European opponents.

After the tournament, Neymar announced his retirement from international football, having scored 80 goals in 130 appearances for Brazil.

“I think my time with the national team has already passed. I made history there and I am very happy about it. I experienced a lot there, gave my blood and my life and always fought and battled for the yellow jersey,” Neymar told the media.
