Chelsea signed England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117 million, a new British transfer record. He signed a contract until 2033.

Chelsea signed England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa on Tuesday in a deal British media valued at £117 million ($157 million), a fee that sets a new transfer record for a British player.
“The 23-year-old forward has signed a contract at Stamford Bridge until 2033,” the London club posted on their website.
Rogers completed his medical on Monday after returning from the World Cup in North America.
“I’m so excited,” said Rogers. “For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I’ve always admired since I was a kid,” Rogers was quoted as saying by the club.
“I’m really excited about the project with the new manager, the players we’ve got and where the club is heading. That’s why I’m here and I can’t wait to get started.”
The transfer surpasses the previous British-record fee set earlier this month, when Manchester City signed England midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116 million. Rogers also becomes Chelsea’s most expensive signing, overtaking the £107 million the club paid Benfica for Enzo Fernandez in 2023.
The move underlines Chelsea’s intent, with the club convincing Rogers to leave Villa despite not qualifying for the Champions League next season. Chelsea had tracked Rogers for two years and ultimately beat Arsenal to his signature after the Premier League champions opted against matching Villa’s asking price.
Rogers’ departure is another setback for Villa manager Unai Emery, following Youri Tielemans’ move to Manchester United and Lucas Digne’s expected switch to Paris Saint-Germain.
“A player with impeccable behaviour and commitment, Morgan leaves Aston Villa with the best wishes of everyone at the football club for both his service to the club and for his future career,” Villa said on their website.
Championship side Middlesbrough will receive 20 percent of the transfer fee due to a sell-on clause agreed when Rogers joined Villa in 2024. Rogers scored 21 goals in 85 league appearances for Villa and played a key role in their Europa League final win over Freiburg in May.
The record transfer of Morgan Rogers for £117 million to Chelsea signifies a potential increase in player valuations, particularly for British players. This move surpasses the previous British-record fee of £116 million for Elliot Anderson.
