Double Olympic medallist P V Sindhu has thanked her husband Venkata Datta Sai for his presence in her corner, joking on X that any loud cheers or aggressive Telugu instructions heard from the stands at the Hylo Open Super 500 are simply him taking his coaching duties very seriously.

Her post came on a day when Sindhu reached the semifinals of the tournament. The former world champion, coming off a runner-up finish at the French Open, beat Germany’s Amalie Schulz 21-12, 21-10 in 28 minutes, winning 42 of the 64 points played.

She will next face compatriot Anmol Kharb, who edged sixth seed Unnati Hooda 21-17, 18-21, 21-16 in one hour and eight minutes. The all-Indian semifinal guarantees an Indian finalist in the women’s singles.

Sindhu said having him in her corner makes more of a difference than he will ever know.

The remark echoes an earlier episode at the Australian Open Super 500 in Sydney, where Sindhu, not feeling entirely herself, chose not to call her coach for a match against compatriot Isharani Baruah, feeling it would tip the scales. She called her husband instead.

Venkata, a data scientist and sports fanatic, arrived in the box as emotional support. By Sindhu’s account, he collected two warnings from the referee but was reading Baruah’s game point by point by the second game. “Helps to have a complete sports fanatic as a husband sometimes,” she wrote on X at the time.
