Mirabai Chanu wins 3rd CWG gold, breaks records in 48kg weightlifting. PM Modi leads tributes for India’s first gold at the Games.

Three-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist Mirabai Chanu dedicated her Glasgow CWG gold medal to her mother, Tombi Devi and coach Vijay Singh, after she broke several records en route to the top of the podium, having won the women’s 48kg weightlifting event on Sunday, July 26.
Mirabai was in a league of her own in the women’s 48kg competition, rewriting the Commonwealth and CWG record books en route to lifting 190kg (85kg snatch and 105kg clean and jerk).
It was India’s first gold in this edition of the Games and third medal overall till now.
“I know it was a very emotional moment when our flag went up with the National Anthem in the arena, which made me realise that I have fulfilled my promise given to my mother and Coach Vijay sir that I will win Gold again,” Mirabai wrote in an Instagram post on Sunday night.
Mirabai recovered from failed opening attempts in both the snatch and clean and jerk to deliver another trademark comeback performance. The Indian finished a commanding 22kg ahead of Nigeria’s Ruth Asuquo Nyong, who claimed silver with a total lift of 168kg.
With the gold medal already bagged and the Asian Games less than two months away, Mirabai chose not to take her final clean and jerk attempt after setting new CWG records in both the clean and jerk and total lift categories.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the tributes for Mirabai after the weightlifting star delivered another historic performance to claim her third CWG gold medal in Glasgow on Sunday.

Modi led the country in congratulating Mirabai, describing her latest win as another ‘glorious chapter’ in India’s weightlifting history. He also lauded men’s lifter Rishikanta Singh for his silver medal-winning performance.
