Ajay Singh on Indian boxing’s CWG success: Focus, preparation and understanding strengths led to best-ever performance in Glasgow.

Boxing Federation of India president Ajay Singh has said that the improving performance of Indian pugilists over the years in multi-sport events like the Commonwealth Games is a result of intense focus through preparation and a clear understanding of their strengths and the opponents’ weaknesses.
Indian women boxers delivered on expectations with five gold medals, while Sachin Siwach and Ankush Panghal won the men’s titles as the nation recorded its best-ever boxing performance at the CWG in Glasgow on Saturday, August 1.
Reigning world champion Jaismine Lamboria (57kg), Asian Games medallist Preeti Pawar (54kg), Asian champion Priya Ghanghas (60kg), Sakshi Chaudhary (51kg) and Arundhati Choudhary (70kg) clinched gold medals, while Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) took home silver.
“I think it has come down to a combination of intense focus, thorough preparation and a clear understanding of both our strengths and our opponents’ weaknesses,” Singh said while replying to a query from News18 Sports during a media interaction.
“We have also ensured that our athletes are in the best possible physical and mental condition while gaining valuable international exposure. The level of competition within our camps has also played a major role,” Singh added.
In some weight categories, there are four boxers competing for a single spot, with each capable of challenging the established athletes on any given day. This strong bench strength has helped push everyone to raise their standards.
“Overall, there is a very positive environment in Indian boxing. But I believe the boxers themselves are best placed to explain what is working and what still needs improvement,” Singh said.
“One more thing I would like to add is that we do face political challenges from time to time. Our focus has always been to shield the boxers, coaches and support staff from those distractions and permit them to concentrate on their preparation and the spirit of the sport,” Singh added.
