The bureau estimated August sales were 6 per cent higher than in August 2025. It placed revised July 2026 sales at $764.5 billion.
US retail and food services sales were estimated at $773.9 billion in August 2026, up 1.2 per cent month on month.
The August figure was 6.0 per cent above August 2025, with June-August sales also up 6.0 per cent year on year.
The data are not adjusted for price changes, limiting read-through for real demand and sourcing plans.
The estimates were adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences, but were not adjusted for price changes, the bureau said in its Advance Monthly Retail Trade Survey.
Total sales for the June 2026 through August 2026 period were up 6.0 per cent from the same period a year earlier. The June-to-July 2026 percentage change was revised to a decline of 0.5 per cent, compared with the earlier estimate of a 0.6 per cent fall.
