Indian compound archer Ganesh Mani Ratnam Thirumuru secured the men’s individual bronze medal at the Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, with a strong showing on Thursday.
A day after helping India win gold in the men’s team event, the 20-year-old bounced back from his semifinal defeat to beat Vietnam’s Cong Duc Dang 149-144 in the bronze medal playoff. Ganesh had earlier seen his hopes of competing for individual gold end with a loss to South Korea’s Kim Jongho in the last-four stage.

Ganesh was flawless for most of the bronze-medal playoff, hitting the target with 14 of his 15 attempts.
His semifinal against Kim Jongho ended in a 144-148 defeat as Ganesh was unable to reproduce the form that had carried him through the quarterfinals. He trailed throughout the contest, eventually losing 29-30 29-30 29-28 29-30 28-30.
Earlier in the day, Ganesh had stormed into the semifinals by beating Chinese Taipei’s Chieh-Lun Chen 148-138 in the quarterfinals at the Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Multipurpose Square.
Ganesh took all five series in that contest, winning 29-28 29-28 30-29 30-26 30-27. He recorded just two 9s, both in the opening two series, before producing a run of 10s.
Meanwhile, Chikitha Taniparthi missed the chance to complete a hat-trick of medals after exiting the women’s compound individual event in the quarterfinals.
Chikitha, who had won gold in both the women’s team and mixed team compound events on Wednesday, narrowly lost 143-144 to Indonesia’s Nurisa Dian Ashrifah in the last-eight stage.
