With the inclusion of investments and income tax in NCERT’s class 9 syllabus, it is now expected that students will have to learn the basics before entering adulthood. Alongside the personal-finance concepts now appearing in school-level curriculum, several government-backed institutions have been running financial-literacy programmes and developing learning material for children.

From NCFE’s Money Smart School Programme to NISM’s free online course, here are five government-backed financial education initiatives that can help school students understand money, saving, investing and financial planning.

1. NCFE Money Smart School Programme

The Money Smart School Programme (MSSP) is an initiative of the National Centre for Financial Education (NCFE) aimed specifically at school students. The programme is designed for Classes 6 to 10 and encourages schools to introduce financial literacy as part of their existing curriculum. NCFE says it has jointly developed five Financial Education Workbooks with CBSE for students in Classes 6 to 10.

The curriculum covers concepts such as money, saving, taxation, banking, investment and financial decision-making. For example, the Class 6 curriculum includes lessons on needs and wants, taxation, the evolution of money, trade and cash memos. The programme is delivered through schools rather than functioning simply as an individual online course.

2. NISM’s Financial Literacy Course For Bharat

The National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM), established by SEBI, offers a Financial Literacy Course for Bharat that is available free of charge. The course is open to learners from different backgrounds and specifically lists school and college students among its intended audiences. It provides 22 hours of learning content, six months of access and a completion certificate.

Through the course, students can learn about budgeting, saving, investing, credit and debt management, setting financial goals, insurance and financial scams.

3. NCFE National Financial Literacy Assessment Test

The National Financial Literacy Assessment Test (NFLAT) is another NCFE initiative for school students. However, it is an assessment designed to test students’ financial literacy. It is aimed at students from Classes 6 to 12 and can help schools introduce students to important financial concepts while assessing their understanding.

The initiative is useful for students who want to test their knowledge of areas such as saving, spending, banking, investment and financial decision-making.

4. RBI Financial Literacy Material For School Children

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has developed dedicated financial-literacy material for schoolchildren. The resource is divided into lessons covering Needs versus Wants, Introduction to Banking, Basics of Investment/Insurance/Pension, Education Loans and Financial Sector Regulators.

5. SEBI Investor Education Resources For School Children

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) also provides financial-education and investor-awareness material aimed at children and young learners. SEBI’s investor-education resources include material specifically designed for schoolchildren, covering basic concepts related to money, saving, investing and investor awareness.
