Star archer Neeraj Chauhan on Saturday, October 3, stunned compatriot Dhiraj Bommadevara 6-4 to bag a bronze in the men’s recurve individual event at the ongoing Asian Games.
The win made Neeraj just the second Indian man after Tarundeep Rai to win an individual recurve medal at the Asian Games. Rai had claimed silver at the 2010 Guangzhou edition.
India thus ended its archery campaign at the top of the standings with nine medals, including five golds, two silvers and as many bronzes.
The two archers had shared the podium on Friday after joining forces to win silver in the men’s team event. But after both fell in the semifinals, they found themselves facing each other for the bronze medal.
Neeraj made the brighter start, capitalising on Dhiraj’s opening 7 to take the first set. The top seed hit back well, stringing together three 10s to claim the next two sets and take a 4-2 lead.
But Neeraj refused to let the contest slip away. He produced three perfect 10s as Dhiraj faltered with two 9s, drawing level at 4-4 and setting up a tense finish.
Dhiraj opened the decider with an 8 before recovering with two 10s. Neeraj, however, held his nerve, shooting 10, 9, 10 to edge out his senior.
Earlier, Dhiraj suffered a 3-7 loss to Paris Olympics bronze medallist Lee Woo Seok of South Korea in the first semifinal, while Neeraj was defeated 1-7 by Japan’s Junya Nakanishi in the other last-four clash.
Dhiraj beat Uzbekistan’s Amirkhon Sadikov 6-2 (29-27, 29-27, 28-28, 28-28) in the quarterfinals, while Neeraj booked his place in the last four with a 7-1 (26-20, 27-24, 26-26, 28-27) victory over Bhutan’s Lam Dorji.
