BASF expands bio-based surfactant capacity in Cincinnati, US

BASF has inaugurated the expansion of its Alkyl Polyglucosides (APGs) production capacity at its Cincinnati, Ohio site. The investment reinforces BASF’s position as a leading APG supplier in the United States and further strengthens its regional manufacturing footprint. First announced in 2023, the expansion enhances BASF’s ability to supply customers from within North America while increasing agility across its global production network.

“The Cincinnati expansion represents an important step in reinforcing BASF’s leadership in the U.S. APG market,” said Gisela Pinheiro, BASF Senior Vice President Home Care and Industrial & Institutional Cleaning. “Combining our broad APG portfolio and formulation expertise with expanded regional production allows us to work even more closely with customers. It strengthens our ability to support innovation and sustainability targets across a wide range of applications.”

BASF has commissioned expanded Alkyl Polyglucosides capacity at its Cincinnati, Ohio site, strengthening its US APG supply position and regional manufacturing footprint.
First announced in 2023, the expansion supports supply to North American customers and adds agility to BASF’s global production network.
BASF also makes APGs in Germany, China and Thailand.

APGs are bio-based, readily biodegradable (according to OECD 301), mild, non ionic surfactants derived from 100 percent natural and renewable feedstocks. Their excellent performance and compatibility with other surfactants make them highly versatile ingredients for personal care, home care, industrial and institutional cleaning, industrial formulations, and agricultural applications.

In addition to Cincinnati, BASF produces APGs at sites in Düsseldorf, Germany; Jinshan, China; and Bangpakong, Thailand. Together, these facilities form a global manufacturing network that enables BASF to provide reliable supply and greater responsiveness to customer needs across regions.
