The Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) is changing the way students who score low in Class 10 and 12 board exams are treated. The word “Fail” will no longer appear on their marksheets, with the state education department introducing a more positive alternative.
Instead of being labelled “Fail”, students who do not meet the required marks will be described as “Eligible for Skill Training”.
The move is aimed at reducing the pressure and stigma that students often face after failing a board exam. The education department believes that poor performance in one examination should not define a student’s abilities or future.
No more ‘Fail’ on Bihar Board marksheets
Under the new approach, students who fall short of the required marks will not have the word “Fail” printed on their Class 10 or Class 12 marksheets.
The term “Eligible for Skill Training” is intended to remind students that there are career options beyond traditional academic routes. Students can explore vocational education and skill-based training and continue working towards a career even if they struggle in board examinations.
The decision is also aimed at reducing the fear and embarrassment associated with poor exam results. Students often face pressure from family and society after being declared unsuccessful in board exams, which can affect their confidence and willingness to continue their education.
One-month special classes for weak students
The Bihar Board is also planning additional academic support for students appearing for compartment or supplementary examinations. Special classes will be conducted for one month, giving students another opportunity to prepare for subjects in which they struggled.
Teachers have been asked to focus on revising difficult topics and helping students strengthen their basics. The aim is to allow students to return for the examination better prepared and with greater confidence.
‘Vidya Sathi’ app for online learning
The state government has also introduced the Vidya Sathi app as part of its efforts to expand access to educational resources.
The platform will provide students with online learning material and guidance that can be accessed from home. It is expected to support board exam preparation as well as preparation for competitive examinations such as engineering and medical entrance tests.
The change in marksheet terminology is also being viewed as an effort to reduce the emotional pressure associated with examination results.
