Gurdial Singh Bhangu, the coach who guided the Indian women’s hockey team to a historic gold medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, has died in Surrey, Canada. He was 86.
Hockey India confirmed his demise in a post on X, paying tribute to the former chief coach for his contribution to the sport.
“Hockey India mourns the sad demise of the Chief Coach of the 2002 Commonwealth Games Gold Medal-winning Indian Women’s Team, Shri Gurdial Singh Bhangu, at the age of 86. His contribution to Indian hockey will always be remembered. Our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones,” the federation wrote.
Bhangu will be remembered for masterminding one of the most significant victories in Indian women’s hockey. Under his guidance, India defeated England 3-2 in the final at Manchester to clinch their maiden Commonwealth Games gold in 2002.
The closely contested final was decided by Mamta Kharab’s extra-time goal after captain Suraj Lata Devi and her teammates had battled through a challenging tournament. The triumph went on to inspire the storyline of the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Chak De! India, which was released in 2007.
While Shah Rukh Khan’s character Kabir Khan was inspired by former India goalkeeper Mir Ranjan Negi, Bhangu was the coach behind the team’s historic success in Manchester.
His tactical instructions proved crucial in the final against England. Aware that an attacking penalty-corner sequence could continue even after the final hooter, Bhangu had told his players to stay alert until the move was completed.
The advice paid off in extra time. As the hooter sounded, England’s defenders briefly switched off, but the Indian players continued the attack. Kharab pounced on a rebound and found the net to put India on the brink of a historic victory.
Although the goal was initially disallowed, the officials subsequently overturned the decision, confirming India’s triumph.
Born in Lyallpur, now Faisalabad in Pakistan, Bhangu grew up in Ambala and played hockey at the university level. He later trained as a coach at the National Institute of Sports in Patiala, where he had the opportunity to learn from hockey legends Dhyan Chand and Olympic gold medallist Balkishan Singh.
Before taking charge of the Indian women’s team, Bhangu had gained considerable international coaching experience. He served as chief coach of the Nigerian women’s hockey team from 1972 to 1976, guiding the side to its first Women’s Hockey World Cup qualification in 1976.
Bhangu was appointed India’s chief coach in 1998, following the team’s 12th-place finish at the Women’s Hockey World Cup. India subsequently won silver at the Bangkok Asian Games that year, laying the foundation for their Commonwealth Games success in 2002.
His contribution to Indian hockey was recognised with the Dronacharya Award in 2000, making him the first hockey coach to receive the prestigious national honour.
Bhangu’s legacy will remain inseparable from India’s historic triumph in Manchester, a victory that gave women’s hockey a significant boost in the country and inspired generations of players.
