The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), which will be organising the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027, has announced the examination schedule, syllabus revisions and the introduction of a new test paper on Robotics and Automation.
The national-level entrance examination will be conducted on February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21, 2027, in forenoon and afternoon sessions across all examination days. The online application portal is expected to open in the middle of August 2026. The full details are now available on gate2027.iitm.ac.in.
Robotics and Automation Paper Introduced
One of the major changes this year is the introduction of a new Robotics and Automation (RA) paper. In another revision, the existing Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF) paper has been converted into a sectional paper under Engineering Sciences (XE).
GATE 2027 will be conducted as a Computer-Based Test (CBT) comprising 30 test papers, according to IIT Madras. The syllabus has been revised after five years to reflect evolving academic and industry requirements. Candidates will have the option of appearing for one or two papers, subject to the prescribed two-paper combinations.
GATE assesses candidates’ understanding of undergraduate-level subjects in Engineering, Technology, Science, Architecture, Commerce, Arts and Humanities. The score is used for admission to Master’s, Direct Doctoral and Doctoral programmes in institutions supported by the Ministry of Education and other government agencies. Several Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and other organisations also use GATE scores for recruitment, while many higher educational institutions consider them for postgraduate admissions.
The GATE score will remain valid for three years from the date of the declaration of results.
To enhance the security of the examination process this year, the online registration system will be integrated with DigiLocker and facial authentication, the IIT stated in a press release. Candidates have been advised to complete the enhanced registration process to ensure seamless verification and entry at examination centres.
The GATE 2027 syllabus will include a new paper on Robotics and Automation. The Textile Engineering and Fibre Science paper will be converted into a sectional paper under Engineering Sciences.
