Himesh Reshammiya says he doesn’t use Auto-Tune 90% of the time; explains why the technology has become essential in music recording

“I don’t use Auto-Tune 90 per cent of the time in my songs. All the singers today who perform modern and contemporary music sing well. If we change our approach to recording and try singing in parts, taking our time, we might not even need Auto-Tune,” Himesh said. He also discussed how the process of recording music has changed over the years. He recalled that composers earlier spent several hours teaching singers their songs and recording them, whereas today’s collaborations often take place remotely, with instructions and revisions exchanged through digital platforms.

He went on to continue, “Auto-Tune mainly comes into play when you send a song to someone, they record it quickly, and you need to edit it. Earlier, composers would spend five to eight hours teaching songs and recording them. Today, composers don’t have that kind of time. They work over WhatsApp, give instructions on video calls, make edits remotely and keep sending revisions.”

Explaining why he believes the technology has become a practical option in the current recording environment, Himesh said that the criticism directed at Auto-Tune does not always take into account the limited time available to composers and singers. He added, “Rather than following the traditional process, Auto-Tune becomes a better option. The perception we have created around Auto-Tune is not entirely fair. It is not as if those singers cannot sing. There may be some newcomers who are still learning, but otherwise, it is largely about the amount of time given to us. How many hours, 10 or 12, can you dedicate to making a song? Since we don’t have that kind of time today, Auto-Tune becomes a faster process.”

Himesh’s comments offer a perspective on how technology and changing recording practices have influenced music production, while also challenging the assumption that the use of pitch correction automatically points to a singer’s limitations.

The conversation is part of the latest season of Komal Nahta’s Game Changers: The Music Series, which features singers, composers and music personalities discussing their creative journeys and experiences in the industry.
