Savita Punia has picked Priyanka Chopra Jonas as her top choice to play her in a biopic, should a film ever be made about the life and career of the celebrated Indian hockey goalkeeper.
The veteran shot-stopper was instrumental in India’s fifth-place finish at the Women’s Hockey World Cup this year, the country’s best result at the tournament since 1974.
She also played a crucial role in India’s gold medal-winning campaign at the Asian Games in Japan this month, a victory that secured the team’s qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
“I never thought of a movie being made on me. But if one is made, Priyanka Chopra is my favourite, and I think she would be able to do justice to the role. When I see their journey, it inspires me a lot,” Savita was quoted as saying by PTI.
Widely known as the ‘Wall of Indian hockey‘, Savita has made 326 international appearances, making her India’s most-capped woman hockey player.
The Padma Shri recipient has witnessed and contributed to the growth of women’s hockey in the country over a career spanning more than two decades.
Priyanka is known for Hindi films including Fashion, Barfi! and Bajirao Mastani, as well as international projects such as Quantico, Citadel and The Bluff, besides playing the legendary Indian boxer Mary Kom in the 2014 biographical sports drama Mary Kom.
Savita’s own story is one of balancing personal responsibilities with sporting ambitions from a young age.
When her mother fell ill, she took on household chores while studying in Class 5, learning to manage domestic duties alongside her pursuit of hockey.
Beyond the turf, the veteran goalkeeper has relatively simple interests. She would rather spend her time with books and music than focus on dressing up or watching movies.
“I like reading books and listening to music. I start my day with the Hanuman Chalisa. I don’t watch many movies; I’ve probably seen eight or nine films so far, the last of which was Deepika Padukone’s ‘Chhapaak’,” she said.
