Harmanpreet Singh’s India are all set to take on arch-rivals Pakistan in their final Pool D game at the FIH Hockey World Cup, with a spot in Round 2 of the competition at stake, besides national pride.
Just as in cricket, the numbers behind hockey’s fiercest rivalry fail to capture the hype that has surrounded it for decades. Yet, the 10,000-capacity Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands, is sold out for Wednesday’s Pool D clash, with a place in the next round on the line in what has become a do-or-die encounter.
India and Pakistan’s hockey stories, however, have unfolded differently from their cricket rivalry. Both teams have experienced a similar decline after once ruling the sport. India won eight Olympic gold medals and lifted the FIH Hockey World Cup in 1975, while Pakistan have three Olympic titles and a record four World Cup wins to their name.
Yet, the two former powerhouses have spent decades chasing a return to their glory days. India’s decline started in the 1980s, while Pakistan’s followed a decade later. Since then, both teams have struggled to rediscover the form that once established them as dominant forces in world hockey.
Pakistan hold the edge in the historic rivalry, winning 82 of their 183 international meetings with India, who have 69 wins, while 32 games have ended in draws. Pakistan also lead the overall goal tally, 407-390.
India’s 10-2 win against Pakistan at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023 remains their biggest victory over their arch-rivals and the highest-scoring game between the two teams.
India and Pakistan have faced each other five times at the FIH Hockey World Cup, with India holding a 3-2 advantage. India have found the net 10 times in those encounters, compared to Pakistan’s seven goals.
The last FIH Hockey World Cup meeting between India and Pakistan came in 2010, when India bagged a 4-1 victory in New Delhi. The neighbours haven’t crossed paths at the tournament since, with Pakistan missing the 2014 and 2023 editions and the two teams avoiding each other at the 2018 World Cup.
Wednesday’s clash will mark the first FIH Hockey World Cup meeting between India and Pakistan in 16 years. With a spot in the next round at stake, this latest chapter in their rivalry promises to mean far more than the numbers suggest.
