International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Kirsty Coventry and Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) President Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani will visit the athletes’ accommodation facilities at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on September 20, a day after the continental multi-sport event officially opens.
The two presidents will visit the Garden Pier section of the Games’ accommodation zone at 11am and interact with athletes representing various National Olympic Committees (NOCs), organisers announced during the Chefs de Mission meeting on Monday.
Unlike previous editions, the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games will not feature a conventional athletes’ village. Delegations from 45 NOCs will instead be housed at multiple locations, including a cruise liner, temporary Asian Games villas at Garden Pier, and hotels across Nagoya city and Aichi prefecture.
The cruise ship designated to accommodate athletes and officials is scheduled to dock at Kinjo Pier in the Port of Nagoya on Tuesday. A welcome ceremony for the vessel will be held at 1pm, with athletes set to begin boarding from the following day.
The Chefs de Mission meeting also outlined arrangements for the Team Welcome Ceremonies, which will take place from September 16 to 18 at the Athletes’ Interaction Area of the Athletes Plaza at Garden Pier.
Three ceremonies will be conducted each day at 10am, 1.30pm and 5pm, with each programme lasting around 30 minutes. The ceremonies will feature cultural performances, NOC flag-raising events, national anthems and souvenir exchanges. A tree-planting ceremony will also be held during the first session on each of the three days.
The OCA Refugee Team, also referred to as the Asian Refugee Team, will be formally welcomed at the athletes’ accommodation area at 10am on September 18. The team consists of two taekwondo athletes.
Several other Games-related meetings and events were also scheduled. A safeguarding officers’ meeting will take place on September 21, while NOC team doctors will meet on September 18 and October 3.
The esports draw is scheduled for September 17. Meanwhile, details of the OCA Athletes’ Committee election, which will be held during the Games, will be presented at the next Chefs de Mission meeting on September 16.
The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games will begin on September 19 and conclude on October 4.
