Jalen Duren and the Detroit Pistons are running out of time to settle their contract dispute, with both sides still separated by a significant financial gap. Detroit is reportedly around $175 million over five years, while Duren wants a deal worth at least $200 million. The 22-year-old is now increasingly open to taking his $9.6 million qualifying offer for 2026-27 if no agreement is reached by the end of September, adding more pressure to negotiations involving a player coming off his first All-Star season and an All-NBA Third Team selection.
Jalen Duren’s Qualifying Offer Could Change His Free-Agency Future
There is a lot at stake for Duren beyond the next contract. He could choose a much smaller one-year deal and put himself in position for unrestricted free agency the following summer. That would give him more control over where he plays and what his next contract looks like.
Marc Stein reported on September 10 that one source briefed on the situation said Duren is “increasingly prepared to play out the coming season on his $9.6 million qualifying offer” if a deal does not materialize by the end of September. It is a major gamble because one injury or poor season could hurt his future earnings.
Duren is coming off his first All-Star season and earned All-NBA Third Team honors after averaging 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds. However, his playoff numbers dropped to 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, which has contributed to the Pistons’ concerns during the negotiations.
The gap is also about more than the total money. Detroit wants to keep a key part of the team that won 60 games, while Duren has a chance to test his value and potentially gain more control over his future.

Detroit also has reason to keep pushing for an agreement. Other teams cannot offer Duren the same five-year deal, with outside offers limited to roughly four years and $177 million. That gives the Pistons an advantage, but losing him in 2027 would leave them with a much harder problem to solve.
Training camp opens September 29, and Duren has until October 1 to accept the qualifying offer. If the two sides cannot close the gap soon, his decision on the $9.6 million offer could become the biggest part of the story.
For now, the Pistons want their young center back, while Duren is betting that his value deserves a much bigger number. The next few weeks could decide whether both sides find common ground or take the risk.
