Kerala school holiday: Amid continuous heavy rainfall across Kerala, holidays were announced in several districts on August 7. The holiday announcements vary from district to district depending on local weather conditions and the severity of the situation.

The decision has been taken as parts of the state continue to witness heavy rain, waterlogging, and the operation of relief camps in some areas. However, previously scheduled examinations and interviews will continue as planned in most districts.

District-wise holiday details:

Pathanamthitta

All educational institutions from Anganwadi centres to professional colleges, along with tuition centres, will remain closed on August 7, District Collector A Nizamudeen announced.

The decision was taken after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for August 6 and an orange alert for August 7, with heavy rainfall continuing and several areas affected by flooding.

The holiday will not apply to previously scheduled public examinations and university exams.

Alappuzha

District Collector Shaji V Nair declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, Anganwadis, and tuition centres, on August 7.

The decision was taken due to waterlogging in several parts of the district, ongoing rain alerts, and the operation of relief camps in some schools. Authorities cited student safety as the primary reason behind the announcement.

Scheduled public examinations will not be postponed.

Wayanad

Following an orange alert issued by the IMD, the Wayanad district administration announced a holiday for educational institutions.

The holiday applies to professional colleges, religious study centres, tuition centres, coaching institutes, and special classes. However, residential institutions are exempted from the order.

District Collector D R Meghashree said institution heads must ensure the safety of students.

Kottayam

Kottayam District Collector Chetan Kumar Meena declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, due to the prevailing weather conditions.

The decision came after the district received a red alert on August 6 and an orange alert for August 7. The holiday also applies to Anganwadis, tuition centres, and special classes.

Previously scheduled examinations will continue as per schedule.

Thrissur

In Thrissur, holidays have been declared for all educational institutions functioning as relief camps.

District Collector Shikha Surendran, who is also the chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority, issued the order under Section 30(2)(xxix) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005.

The order clarified that pre-scheduled examinations and interviews will not be affected. Educational institutions have been instructed to take necessary steps to compensate for the loss of academic hours due to the holiday.

Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious as heavy rainfall continues across several parts of Kerala. Further updates on weather conditions and additional holiday announcements are expected based on the situation.
